'Save the Tuna' Salvemos el atún rojo
Palma Aquarium ha iniciado una campaña para salvar el atún rojo del Mediterráneo (Thunnus thynnus). La campaña titulada 'Save the Tuna' tiene como objetivo difundir información sobre la situación de esta especie en peligro de extinción y así concienciar a la sociedad civil sobre cómo podemos contribuir a su conservación.
El atún rojo es la especie pesquera más comercializada del planeta.
El Mediterráneo y las aguas que rodean las Islas Baleares, es la zona de reproducción más importante de esta especie.
La sobreexplotación y la pesca ilegal dificultan la reproducción y hacen que vaya desapareciendo la población de atún.
Las piscifactorías y las granjas de engorde no ayudan, si no que empeoran la situación. Estas contribuyen al deterioro de los mares y a la disminución de otras especies. También es importante destacar que el atún que se encuentra en estas granjas no se reproduce, ya que no puede reproducirse en cautividad.

¿Qué pueden hacer los restaurantes de Mallorca para ayudar al atún rojo?
Palma Aquarium quiere contar con el apoyo de los restaurantes de Mallorca. Los restaurantes pueden decidir quitar el atún rojo de sus cartas, o comprometerse a comprarlo sólo de fuentes sostenibles, como el arte de pesca de las almadrabas. Palma Aquarium puede ayudar a los restaurantes a encontrar una fuente sostenible de atún y además quiere promocionar a los restaurantes que se unan a la causa con una acreditación especial.

¿Qué podemos hacer todos para ayudar al atún rojo?
Palma Aquarium está recolectando firmas para reclamar el Santuario del Mar Balear, área marina protegida. Tiene como meta recoger 500.000 firmas. Para firmar acuda a la recepción de las oficinas del Palma Aquarium con su DNI o firme en la exposición permanente ubicada en el corazón del Parque Marino, un homenaje al atún rojo. Más adelante se habilitarán más lugares para la recogida de firmas.

Save the TunaPalma Aquarium has launched a campaign to save the Mediterranean Blue Fin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus). The campaign is entitled 'Save the Tuna' and aims to inform the general public about this species in danger of extinction and so spread awareness in society about how we can help in its conservation.
Blue fin tuna is the most commercialized fishing species on the planet.
The Mediterranean Sea and more specifically the waters surrounding the Balearic Islands make up this species' most important breeding area.
Over fishing and illegal fishing techniques make reproduction almost impossible and are leading to the complete destruction of the species.
Fish factories and fishing farms do not help; they make the situation worse. They damage the sea's natural habitat and also cause a reduction in population of other species. It is also important to note that the blue fin tuna cannot and does not reproduce when in captivity.

What can Mallorca Restaurants do to help save the blue fin tuna?
The Palma Aquarium is working to secure support from as many Mallorca Restaurants as possible. Restaurants can decide to take blue fin tuna off their menu, or commit to only buying tuna which comes from sustainable sources such as through fishermen using the 'Almadraba' fishing technique. The Palma Aquarium can put restaurants in contact with a sustainable provider and also wants to help to promote restaurants which lend their support to the campaign by means of a special certification.

What can we all do to help the blue fin tuna?
The Palma Aquarium is collecting signatures for a petition for a Balearic Sea Sanctuary, a protected marine area. The aim is to collect 500,000 signatures. To sign the petition please go along to the offices reception at the Aquarium with your Id. Alternatively you can sign the petition at the permanent exhibition dedicated to Blue Fin Tuna inside the Aquarium. The petition will be available to sign at other venues soon.
