La almendra mallorquina, estandarte de la dieta mediterránea.

La almendra ha tenido históricamente un papel muy importante en los campos de Mallorca, y desde tiempos Romanos el almendro en flor ha embellecido los campos isleños, convirtiéndose en imagen típica de la isla.

Actualmente bajo el nombre de almendra mallorquina se amparan cerca de un centenar y medio de variedades de almendra, muchas de ellas autóctonas. La almendra es una pieza esencial de la cultura gastronómica isleña. Productos tan típicos como el gató de almendras, bizcocho típicamente servido con helado de almendras,  el turrón, dulce tan típico de las navidades y siempre basado en las almendras, y el licor de almendra…son indispensables en cualquier tratado de gastronomía mallorquina.

Actualmente la Asociación para el Fomento de la Almendra Mallorquina, esta poniendo en marcha una campaña de promoción de la tradicional 'Almendra Mallorquina' y esta regalando sacos de almendras a Agroturismos participantes de Mallorca. Entre los establecimientos participantes están Sa Pedrissa y Cases de Son Barbassa.

Mallorcan almonds, an essential part of the Mediterranean diet

Almonds have formed a part of the Mallorcan diet and scenery for many years; the almond trees have been embellishing the Mallorcan countryside with their beautiful blossoms since Roman times. There are at present almost a hundred and fifty different varieties of almonds registered as 'Mallorcan Almonds', many of which are native to the Balearics.

Almonds are an essential part of Mallorcan gastronomy and cooking, and many typical Mallorcan dishes are based on them; Gató de almendras, the almond sponge cake typically served with Helado de Almendra or almond ice cream, Turrón, the typical Christmas sweet, all varieties of which are originally based on almonds, and Licor de Almendras, or almond liquor, are just a few examples.

The Balearic Association for the promotion of Almonds is launching a campaign to promote Mallorcan almonds, and is distributing promotional sacks of them to participating country hotels and estates. Amongst the establishments participating are Sa Pedrissa and Cases de Son Barbassa, both home to restaurants presented by SkyBlue Mallorca.
