Wines with Added Value
Jaume de Puntiró in Santa Maria is a small, family run wine estate which produces wines from organically cultivated vines, mainly of the native Mallorcan variety. The name, 'Jaume de Puntiró' is the nickname for the founder of the winery, Jaume Calafat. The Calafat family has owned the Puntiró manor house in Santa Maria for 230 years and has always been referred to in the village as the 'Puntiró' family. The present day winery was founded in 1981 by Pere Calafat's father, Jaume Calafat but the family had produced wines for their own consumption for many years before. The new wine estate marked the beginning of selling their wines to the general public but it wasn't until 1993 when Pere Calafat took over, that the Puntiró wines were first bottled.
Facilities at the Jaume de Puntiró wine estate were slowly renovated and the winery was able to extend its range of wines to include white, rosé, sweet and 'crianza' wines as well as new grape varieties in its vineyards. Pere believes the wines stand out because of their 'warm, Mediterranean character and because they are so easy on the pallet'. The Jaume de Puntiró wines are directed at the consumer and the winery's aim is to produce wines which the consumers enjoy drinking; for the consumer to enjoy a wine which is unique because of the native grape varieties used to make it. ‘We are committed to producing something unique, different and native to the island' states the wine maker. Jaume de Puntiró does not limit itself to producing wines of the native variety, but it does always strive to produce wines which give the consumer the opportunity to enjoy a wine which they know is more exclusively Mallorcan.
It is important also to note that the Jaume de Puntiró wines are all produced organically. Consumers may be surprised at the fact that this is not emphasized in any of the winery's advertising or even on the wine labels, but this is because it is so much an integral part of the wine estate's daily management that it doesn't feel the need to highlight it. ‘What needs to stand out is the flavour of our wines' says Pere ‘the fact that the wines are produced organically just adds value to them.' It is no doubt a factor that will only confirm the quality of these wines even further in the minds of anyone who has the pleasure to taste them.
