Organic Wines with Personality
The Fullana family has a longstanding tradition in wine production. Sixty years ago, Miquel's grandfather used to produce wines using the native Mantonegro grapes which grow on the family estate in Santa Maria. Nowadays the family still uses their grandfather's vineyards as well as the vineyards they now own in Esporles at the Es Verger finca where they grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties. The winery was not officially founded until the year 2000 when Miquel decided to commercialize his wines. From the outset he was set on cultivating all the grapes organically and thus he founded one of the first organically produced wine estates ever on Mallorca.
He was also innovative in that he combined French and Mallorcan vines in order to create a wine which is both organic and creative. The family has always wanted to base all their wines on the Mallorcan Mantonegro grape, and to produce a limited amount of wine of the very highest quality possible. Their most successful, and prized wine Ses Marjades has more than lived up to their expectations as it is a top of the range example of a Mallorcan wine. They also produce Els Rojals annually and two other wines, the wine harvest permitting, but only in very small amounts and the bottles are usually reserved for their regular customers.
The Es Verger estate is very well looked after and encouraged to renew and replenish itself. Miquel admits that organic production can be very problematic but that it is a way of life his family has chosen and one which can bring forth many interesting results. He states that constant control and prevention are the keys for achieving optimal results. The location of the estate at 450 meters above sea level also favours organic production due the special micro-climate.
Miquel's main objective, together with the help of his son Jaume and daughters Pepa and Rosa, is to continue producing high-quality wines, whilst slowly increasing the annual production.
Es Verger also makes a high quality olive oil with Designation of Origin 'Oli de Mallorca'.
