Creative wines, traditional Mallorcan varieties
Andrés Gelabert, the founder of Angel Wine Estate, is a Mallorcan who was brought up in the United States, and followed his heart all the way back to the island several years ago. As a youngster, he was surrounded by the wine industry in California, and this sparked his interest in the world of wine and its creative process. When he moved back to Mallorca he immersed himself in the world of Mallorcan winemaking, Mallorcan grapes and the island's age old history of viticulture.
It was precisely that old-age wine culture he came across when he found and decided to buy Finca Sa Basseta in Santa Maria del Camí, an old Mallorcan finca with 60 year old vines. 'The terrain here is perfect and we still use grapes from the original vines we found when we came here, although we have of course introduced other varieties.' The winery was founded in 2008 and since then Angel Wine Estate has produced some very unique wines.
Angel Wine Estates philosophy is at once traditionalist and innovative. They value Mallorcan grapes very highly and at least 50% of every wine is made from Mallorcan varieties. At the same time, the winery uses modern technology and methods to create wines which are fresh and sophisticated – 'we want people to be able to taste the fruit, the grape, so we have to work very hard to grow optimum grapes out in the vineyard. We want the wines to have a hint of oak, a sophisticated undertone, but we don't want anything to overpower the taste of the grape itself.' All Angel's wines are fresh and easy to drink, with an excellent finish and after taste.
Look out for the new Mant Blanc in Spring 2011: a white wine made using the red native Mallorcan Mantonegro grapes!
