Pioneers of Mallorcan Winemaking

There are documents which relate the Mesquida family to the production of wine from as far back as the XVI century although the current winery was founded by Barbara and Jaume's (the current directors) great grandfather, in 1945 in Porreres, Mallorca. Jaume Mesquida Barceló was the founder of the wine estate and he used to produce wine and sell it to the local farmers who would use it to replenish their strength after a hard day's work. His son of the same name continued making wines and began bottling them and delivering them to his customers. Then Jaume Mesquida Oliver, Barbara and Jaume's father, was the first member of the family to oficially study enology and viticulture. His studies helped him to renovate and develop the estate's techniques. Amongst other things, by planting new varieties of grape and by bringing the first ever stainless steel storage tank to the island, Jaume Mesquida contributed to the renaissance of wine in the Balearics.

Barbara and Jaume Mesquida Mora took over the running of the estate in 2004 and became the fourth generation of this family project, enthusiastic to continue innovating within the world of Mallorcan enology. The winery now continues to experiment so as to produce new wines which keep surprising the world of wine in the Balearics. Jaume Mesquida wines have been awarded more than eight different prizes since 2004.

The Jaume Mesquida winery wants to achieve vines that are rich and complex ecosystems that can protect and regenerate themselves. It is very conscious of the fact that there are always ways one can reduce the impact on the environment and that a richer soil can be achieved just by applying certain basic concepts. These concepts include completely eliminating the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and replacing them with homeopathic remedies, making the most of the weeds that grow around the vines as they bring vitality to the soil, and a more conscientious use of machinery and tractors in order to minimize the impact these have on the soil. The winery is developing and implementing all of these methods and in so doing is contributing to the agriculture of tomorrow and to a richer soil full of energy and vitality.

The Jaume Mesquida wine estate has taken it on itself not only to produce exceptional wines, but also to help spread the culture of wine on the islands. With this aim in mind, the estate organises a program of activities called 'Cultura, Terra i Vi' which takes place at the winery in Porreres. The activities include sharing art, literature, theatre and music which is all related to the history and world of wine. Jaume Mesquida also organises the 'Art i Vi' project which takes place once a year in Palma and involves getting local artists to use wine boxes as a backdrop for their work.
