He was a young and dynamic 22 year old at the time and he felt a genuine passion for wine and a strong determination to make his vineyards a success. The Spanish civil war broke out in 1936 and instead of giving in to the difficulties this caused his business he used the opportunity to make the first Mallorcan vintage wine, a wine that had been aged and that would last longer, and so be easier to keep. The wines were originally given the name 'Franja Roja' and in the 1940s they became more well known and the sparse 12 hectares which the estate had started with slowly grew bigger and bigger. José Luis Ferrer's grandsons became involved in the vineyards in 1982 and the facilities have not stopped growing and improving since. They are now the proud owners of 92 hectares of vineyards and this modern, state-of-the-art wine cellar which can be visited today. The José L Ferrer wine estate is currently the biggest on the island. Since the third generation of the family became involved in the estate the range of wines produced has extended to include more white wines, as well as rosés and spumants. There are now four different ranges of wines; the most classic of them all is the Reserva range which is a direct descendant of the original wines produced, the Veritas range is designed for the more modern palate and the Dues range combines two varieties of grape, one native variety and one foreign variety, to create an innovative and different taste, and last but not least is the Special Edition range. The current director of the estate, José Luis Roses Ferrer has no less passion than his grandfather when it comes to the world of wine. He told us that he delights in the fact that wines still depend on the most natural and traditional of processes, a vine still needs to grow for six or seven years before it can be used for the production of wine and 'no two vines are the same'. His passion is reflected in the care given to the production of every bottle at José L Ferrer, and in the public recognition given to the estate in the form of various prizes. Amongst others, the Veritas Dolç received a Gold Bacchus 2006 award in Madrid for the best sweet white wine in Spain. But José Luis assured us that for him the best prize is still the confidence and enjoyment of the wines by consumers. SkyBlue Mallorca the most complete and up-to-date guide for Mallorca Restaurants |
